Some movies entertain you. Some make you think. And then there are rare ones that somehow do both without even trying too hard. Sitaare Zameen Par is that rare film.
Directed by R.S. Prasanna and starring Aamir Khan, the story follows Gulshan Arora a sharp tongued, self-important basketball coach who crashes his car drunk and ends up in court. He's given a choice: jail or 90 days of community service coaching a team of Special abilities for a basketball tournament. Naturally, he picks the easier option. Except it turns out to be anything but.
What makes this film special isn’t just Aamir, though he’s great. It’s the other actors. Their performances feel natural and real, almost like they aren’t acting at all. Watching them can feel a little uncomfortable because it’s rare to see such honesty in movies. There’s no fake drama, no clear villain, just a group of people giving their best every day, with more heart than most of us show in a lifetime. You feel their joy and struggle. It stays with you long after the film ends.
The film is a remake of the 2018 Spanish movie Champions, and Bollywood has done it proud. It collected over Rs 250 crore at the box office, which says a lot for a film with no action sequences or item numbers, just a good story told well.
Genelia Deshmukh is warm and grounding in her role, and the chemistry between the cast feels lived-in rather than rehearsed.
