The latest news online from Indonesia says a tragedy took place at an Islamic boarding school. On Monday afternoon, a school building collapsed while students were praying.
Authorities confirmed one student died and dozens are still
missing. Rescuers are searching for 38 people who may be trapped under the
rubble. Around 91 people have escaped on their own so far, and 11 have been
rescued alive. A total of 77 injured students are being treated at nearby
hospitals.
Officials said that the main cause of the collapse was the failure of the building’s foundation pillars, which gave way while workers were concreting the fourth floor. Many students were trapped inside the heavy structure after it fell. Currently, rescue teams are checking the safety of the rest of the building and preparing safe routes to evacuate more people.
Building safety rules need to be stricter, says the National
Disaster Management Agency. They warned everyone to follow safety standards,
especially when building large schools and halls.
In Bogor, West Java, three people died and many were injured
after a building collapsed during a Quran recital less than a month ago.
In recent weeks, Indonesia has suffered two such disasters,
including the collapse at Al-Khoziny Islamic Boarding School in Sidoarjo, East
Java. Searches continue for missing students while families wait for news.
