In their first encounter of the UAE-leg of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 at the Shiekh Zayed Stadium, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) defeated Royal Challengers (RCB) by nine wickets, wiping the Virat Kohli-led squad out for 92 in 19 overs.
RCB scored 92 runs after winning the toss and electing to bat first. Except for Devdutt Padikkal, no one in the RCB lineup scored more than 20 runs. Kohli, who had already stated that the current season will be his final as RCB captain, only managed to score five runs.
The Knight Riders' bowling efforts were beautiful. It was a perfect performance. Undoubtedly the star of the show was Varun Chakravarthy. Glen Maxwell and Wanindu Hasaranga got two wickets back-to-back. All of the batsmen failed to deliver as the KKR pacers and subsequently mysterious spinner Varun Chakravarthy kept the hitters quiet.
Russell also took three wickets, while Lokie Ferguson took two wickets and Prasidh Krishna took one. Chakravarthy finished his four overs with scores of 3/13.
Shubman Gill smashed a 34-ball 48 to anchor an 82-run opening partnership with debutant Venkatesh Iyer, who bowled a 27-ball 41 not out.
